The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has begun plans to switch to cleaner energy vehicles after receiving three new buses powered by compressed natural gas.
The buses were presented on April 21, 2026, by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PICNGEV).
In a statement released on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police said the move marks the start of a wider plan to modernise its transport system and reduce fuel costs.
According to the statement, the new buses are part of efforts to improve mobility for officers while also cutting down on environmental impact.
Officials at the event said more steps will follow, including the conversion of existing police vehicles to run on compressed natural gas.
They noted that the plan will reduce spending on fuel and support a cleaner environment.
The initiative also includes training programmes to help police personnel manage and maintain the new system.
Speaking at the event, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, thanked the organisations for their support and described the project as important for the future of policing in Nigeria.
He said the shift to gas-powered and electric vehicles will help the police operate more efficiently and align with global standards.
The police chief added that the new buses will be used to improve the movement and welfare of officers across the country.
He also said the force plans to set up its own vehicle conversion centres to handle maintenance and ensure the system continues to work effectively.
The ceremony ended with the official handover of the buses and a tour of the vehicles.
The police said the project shows its commitment to modern policing and better service delivery through the use of cost-effective and environmentally friendly technology.
