Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has stirred controversy after alleging that American streamer IShowSpeed’s recent tour of Africa was not purely cultural, but part of a covert mission linked to tech billionaire Elon Musk.
In a viral video circulating online, Seun Kuti claimed that the widely publicised tour, during which IShowSpeed visited about 20 African countries in January 2026, was allegedly sponsored to gather information about satellite coverage across the continent.
According to Kuti, the tour may have had motives beyond entertainment and cultural exchange. He suggested that the visits to various locations, including remote or “bushy” areas, were strategic.
“You can’t know the deals they’re making behind the scenes. You can’t know the people they’re talking to behind the scenes. You just think they’re coming to talk to you but they all have agenda,” he said.
Kuti further alleged that he was initially contacted by individuals involved in organising the tour, but the meeting never materialised after he agreed to participate.
“After IShowSpeed’s promoter and producer of his African tour called that we want to see you and I agreed, they didn’t call me again or come to the shrine again when they reached Nigeria,” he explained.
He added that attempts to reach them afterwards were unsuccessful, describing their later communication as dismissive.
Kuti went on to claim that he later discovered the tour was allegedly funded by Elon Musk to assess the reach of satellite infrastructure in Africa.
“Only to find out the day before yesterday that Elon Musk was the one that sponsored the whole thing to know where his satellite don reach for Africa,” he said. “That’s why they were visiting bushy areas. So, all that was a spy job for Elon Musk.”
The claims, however, were not backed by any publicly available evidence at the time of reporting.
IShowSpeed had earlier stated that his African tour was aimed at promoting African culture, connecting with fans, and exploring different countries across the continent.
His visit attracted significant attention online, with large crowds and viral moments recorded in multiple cities.
The tour was widely seen as part of a growing trend of global influencers engaging with African audiences and showcasing the continent’s culture to international viewers.
Seun Kuti’s allegation has generated mixed reactions on social media. While some users expressed curiosity and called for further investigation, many others dismissed the claim as speculative.
