Chelsea Football Club have dismissed head coach Liam Rosenior after just over three months at the helm, following a disappointing run of form in the league.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the club said the decision, though difficult, was driven by “recent results and performances” that fell “below the necessary standards”.
“Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior.
“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.
“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment midway through the season,” the statement read.
Rosenior, who took over in January on a long-term deal after succeeding Enzo Maresca, leaves the club in seventh position on the league table, seven points adrift of the UEFA Champions League qualification spots.
His exit follows a troubling spell in which Chelsea lost five consecutive Premier League matches without scoring, including defeats to Manchester City, Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United, and Everton.
Despite the poor league form, Chelsea noted that the team remains in contention in the FA Cup and is still pushing for European qualification.
“Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future,” the club added.
Assistant coach Calum McFarlane has been placed in temporary charge of the squad and will lead the team into their upcoming FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley.
The club also indicated that it will begin a thorough process to identify a permanent replacement, stating: “As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”
