President Bola Tinubu has approved a fresh round of appointments across four key education and examination agencies.
This notification was made know in a statement issued Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The President named Prof. Modupe Adeola Adelabu as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Examinations Council (NECO). The current Registrar of NECO, Professor Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, will remain in office.
For the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, Tinubu appointed Professor Babatunde Salako as Chairman of the Board. This comes after the President, on April 10, renewed the appointment of the NBTE Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, for a second and final five-year term.
Engr. Dr. Bongfa Binfa has been appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, Plateau State. His appointment is for a single term of five years. He takes over from the institution’s pioneer rector, whose tenure ended on 16 March, 2026.
The President also extended the tenure of Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi as Director/Chief Executive of the National Library of Nigeria. She will serve a final five-year term, having first been appointed on 2 September, 2021.
Giving background on the appointees, Onanuga described Prof. Adelabu as a retired professor of educational administration who attained full professorship at Obafemi Awolowo University. She served as Deputy Governor of Ekiti State from 2013 to 2014 and chaired the NBTE between 2018 and 2021.
Prof. Salako, Onanuga noted, is an internationally recognized researcher with extensive experience in higher education, institutional governance, and national policy. He was Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, NIMR, from 2016 to 2024.
During his tenure, NIMR recorded major reforms, stronger research governance, broader international partnerships, and upgrades in infrastructure and research output.
The new Rector, Dr. Binfa, holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.
Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Rector, Academic, at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny, and was a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Federal Polytechnic, Idah.
On Prof. Anunobi, Onanuga said she has driven several reforms since assuming office, aimed at transforming the National Library into a modern, technology-driven knowledge hub.
Key initiatives under her include the development and rollout of the National Repository of Nigeria, the Newspaper and Magazine Locator, the Index and Abstract to Nigerian Newspapers, and the National Virtual Library of Nigeria.
She has also been central to efforts to complete the long-delayed National Library Headquarters project and has begun plans to transfer heritage collections from the 34 state branches to the new headquarters in Abuja.
“The President expects that the renewal of her tenure would ensure continuity in the implementation of ongoing reforms, completion of the National Library Headquarters project, and execution of the 2025–2030 Strategic Plan of the institution,” Onanuga stated.
