The Federal High Court of Nigeria on Monday April 27, 2026 officially launched its electronic filing (E-filing) platform in Lagos Judicial division, signalling the end of gruelling and excruciating manual labor of filing processes era.
It was a landmark event which was graced by Judicial officers, legal practitioners and other stakeholders in the Justice system.
In his address at the epoch making Go-live event, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Honourable Justice John T. Tsoho, declared that the launch of the E-filing System in the Lagos division is not merely a technical upgrade, but a fundamental entrenchment of the efficiency, transparency and integrity of the Judicial process.
“We are not just installing software, we are dismantling the barriers that have historically slowed the wheels of justice.
The transition from paper-heavy corridors to a digital ecosystem is no longer a luxury but a categorical necessity for the Nigerian legal system, he said.
Justice Tsoho stressed that the move is designed to enhance transparency and dismantle systemic vulnerabilities associated with physical files, such as tampering, loss, or damage.
“For too long, the corridors of the Federal High Court have been synonymous with the physical weight of paper and mountains of case files.
“Today, we declare that era over. We are not just installing software; we are dismantling the barriers that have historically slowed the wheels of justice,” Justice Tsoho stated.
The Chief Judge noted that the new system ensures a digital footprint for every action, eliminating the possibility of backdating processes and bypassing gatekeepers who seek to monetise access to the court.
According to John Justice Tsoho, with the E-filing platform, the court registry will no longer close at 2.00 p.m. Litigants can file from any location with internet access and all filing fees are to be processed through integrated electronic payment gateways, ensuring that every kobo due to the Federation is instantly accounted for.
“The time for a file to reach a judge’s desk has been reduced from days to seconds.
“Lawyers are encouraged to adopt digital signatures and digital seals for all documents that require authentication. They should use the E-Affidavit platform for documents requiring endorsement of a commissioner for oaths.”
“By adopting digital signature and digital seals and by utilising the E-Affidavit platform for documents requiring the endorsement of a Commissioner for Oaths, counsel will significantly reduce the need for printing, manual signing and the subsequent scanning of documents for the purpose of E-filing.. This will promote more seamless, efficient and truly digital filing process.” Chief Judge Tsoho stated.
He expressed that that with patience, cooperation and commitment from both the Bar and the Bench, the new initiative will greatly enhance the efficiency, transparency of accessibility of Nigeria’s Judicial system.
” Today we transist from the ink-stained ledger to the digital cloud. We move from the slow walk of bureaucracy to the speed of fibre-optic justice” he said.
In his keynote address, the Chief Judge of Borno State, Honourable Justice Kashim Zannah disclosed that Borno State commenced its E-filing since 2020, adding that it drastically reduced the stress and difficulties encountered in manual filing.
Bolstering the argument for digitalisation, Justice Zannah who is the Chairman of the Judicial Information Technology and Policy Committee shared a harrowing success story of E-filing in Borno State.
Justice Zannah disclosed that during the recent flood disaster in Maiduguri, which left physical courtrooms and registries water-logged, the judiciary did not lose a single document.
“All the registries were flooded and destroyed. Yet, we did not lose a single case document because they were all safely stored in the cloud.
“While the physical courts were underwater, lawyers were still filing cases from their homes, and the business of the court moved on,” Zannah said.
“While states like Borno, Bayelsa, Delta, Niger, and Taraba have already boarded the train of progress,” Justice Zannah urged other states, including Ekiti, Ebonyi, and Ogun, to follow suit.
He commended the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for the initiative to commence digital cloud in Lagos Judicial division.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), represented by the Chairman of the Surulere Branch, Mr Anene Nwadukwu, expressed unwavering support for the initiative, noting that technology is the only way to maintain Lagos as a centre of excellence in legal service delivery.
Other NBA Chairmen from Ikeja, Lagos and Ikorodu branches commended the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court Justice Tsoho for the new development in the Judicial process.
