ANTICIPATION is building as top clubs and state-backed teams prepare for the 2026 edition of the Atlantic Rugby Sevens, one of Nigeria’s premier rugby competitions.
The Media Coordinator of the federation, Tolu Oguntimehin, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria NAN reports that the event is scheduled for May 2, 2026 at Rugby School Nigeria, Eko Atlantic City, Lagos.
Oguntimehin said the tournament would bring together some of the country’s finest rugby talents, promising thrilling action for fans and stakeholders.
In the men’s category, Cowrie RFC of Lagos, Barewa RFC of Kano, Racing RFC of Lagos and Nigeria Police RFC headline a strong and competitive lineup.
The women’s category will feature Nigeria Police RFC, Delta State Women’s Team and Edo Women’s RFC, highlighting the steady growth and increasing competitiveness of women’s rugby in the country.
Oguntimehin said beyond the race for silverware, the Atlantic Rugby Sevens continued to serve as a vital platform for talent development and elite competition.
“It offers players the chance to test themselves against quality opposition, refine their skills and gain exposure in the fast-paced sevens format,” he said.
He added that the tournament had continued to attract wider attention due to its organisation and the quality of participation.
“We are committed to raising the standard of the competition each year, ensuring it meets international best practices while providing opportunities for local players to shine,” he said.
He added that the 2024 Olympic gold medallist Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang would further enhance the prestige of this year’s event.
Grandidier-Nkanang, plays as a wing or fullback for Top 14 side Pau and the French national team, and his participation is expected to bring global attention and valuable experience to the tournament.
Oguntimehin said the competition reflected a growing ambition to position Nigeria as an emerging force in global rugby and a hub for sports innovation in Africa.
“We believe events like this will continue to inspire the next generation of players and strengthen Nigeria’s presence on the international rugby scene,” he said.
With increasing participation, improved organisation, and rising standards, the Atlantic Rugby Sevens is steadily establishing itself as a flagship event on the nation’s sporting calendar. NAN
