The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, is set to seek re-election to represent Zaria Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, amid speculation about a possible Senate bid.
PrimeTimes Nigeria understands that there had been growing rumours that the Speaker was considering contesting for the Kaduna North senatorial seat currently held by Khalid Ibrahim Mustapha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The speculation gained traction in political circles, with claims that Tajudeen had nursed an ambition to move to the Senate.
However, sources suggested that the alleged plan may have been shelved following the intervention of the Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani.
According to The Nation, insiders revealed that the governor advised the Speaker to retain his seat in the House of Representatives, noting that consultations were ongoing within the All Progressives Congress to ensure he retains his position as Speaker in the next assembly.
Reacting to the development, a close aide to the Speaker dismissed claims of any Senate ambition, insisting that Tajudeen had never declared interest in the race.
“The question is if the Speaker ever told anybody that he was contesting the election to the Senate? To the best of my knowledge, he has told nobody that he wants to go to the Senate,” the aide told journalists
He added, “My boss wants to return to the House of Representatives. That is all I can tell you now.”
As of the time of filing this report, the Speaker’s Media Office had yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
Meanwhile, a former governor of Kaduna State, Ramadan Yero, is reportedly gaining support to emerge as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Kaduna North senatorial district.
Speculation is that Yero’s bid is being backed by Governor Sani and other influential stakeholders in the area, positioning him as a strong contender for the seat currently held by the PDP.
