Atiku Abubakar, former vice president has cautioned against reported plans to suspend political campaigns in parts of Northern Nigeria.
He described the move as a threat to democratic rights amid worsening insecurity.
His reaction follows suggestions reportedly being considered in the Senate to halt political activities in several violence-affected states, including Borno, Benue and Plateau.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Phrank Shaibu, his spokesman, Atiku said while insecurity remains a serious national concern, it must not be used to justify restrictions on democratic participation.
He stated: “Let it be clearly stated that the right to vote and participate in the electoral process is fundamental and cannot be abridged under any guise.
“Whether deliberate or disguised”, to restrict political activities in affected regions would raise concerns about voter exclusion and disenfranchisement.
Atiku stressed that the issue goes beyond campaigns, insisting it touches on representation and the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.
“You cannot cure insecurity by silencing the voices of the people. Democracy must not become a casualty of government failure,” he said.
According to him, citizens in all regions deserve both security and unrestricted participation in the democratic process, adding that it is the responsibility of government to guarantee both.
He further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the Federal Government to clarify their positions and reassure Nigerians that no part of the country would be denied its constitutional rights.
The debate follows concerns raised in the National Assembly over escalating insecurity in parts of the North-East, North-West and North-Central. Senator Abdul Ningi had earlier suggested the possibility of suspending political activities in some frontline states, arguing that insecurity has made normal political engagement difficult.
The proposal has continued to generate controversy among political stakeholders and civil society actors, with critics warning it could undermine democratic freedoms.
