Federal Government College Enugu old students win Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) Sports Carnival in Enugu

FEDERAL Government College, Enugu Old Students Association has emerged overall winner of the 4th edition of the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) Sports Carnival held in Enugu.

The school secured the top position after clinching eight gold medals, three silver and two bronze.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the week-long competition, which brought together old students from about 30 unity schools across the country was hosted by Enugu State.

Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene, winners of the 2025 edition, finished second with seven gold medals, seven silver and three bronze.

The sports carnival featured a wide range of activities including football, tug of war, march-past, swimming, lawn tennis, table tennis, snooker, ludo, draught, badminton, volleyball, basketball and golf, among others.

Speaking at the closing ceremony held on Sunday at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, President-General of USOSA, Mr Michael Magaji, said the event was aimed at fostering unity and strengthening relationships among members.

According to him, sports remains a vital tool for nation-building and social cohesion.

“This platform enables us to come together, manage our diversity and demonstrate that we are committed to unity, excellence and teamwork for national development,” he said.

Magaji noted that the association had continued to use sports and other activities to reinforce long-standing relationships among members, some of which date back over 30 years to 50 years.

He explained that the choice of Enugu as the host was based on the willingness of its members to organise the event, adding that USOSA rotated its activities across different parts of the country.

“We are a national body and we believe in one Nigeria. We go wherever our members are willing to host, and Enugu has once again proven to be a worthy host,” he said.

Magaji also commended the Enugu State Government for its efforts in promoting public education and developing smart schools, describing it as a model for other states.

He further highlighted the association’s commitment to giving back to society, particularly in the education sector.

“Many years ago, the government invested in us through quality public education. This is our way of giving back by contributing to the development and transformation of that system,” he added.

NAN also reports that USOSA Sports Carnival is part of ongoing efforts by the association to promote unity, healthy competition and national integration among alumni of unity schools across Nigeria. (NAN)
