The European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Mignot, on Wednesday visited the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, at his residence in Onitsha, Anambra State.

PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that Obi disclosed the visit in a post on his 𝕏 handle, sharing a photograph of himself and the envoy dressed in similar Igbo traditional attire.

He described the engagement as fruitful.

“It was an enriching meeting as we shared some useful conversations,” Obi said, adding that it was an honour and privilege to host the diplomat.

He, however, did not disclose details of the discussion.

The visit comes amid political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Obi now a member of the African Democratic Congress.

The former Anambra governor is considered one of the leading contenders for the party’s presidential ticket.

Last week, Obi also held a breakfast meeting in Abuja with foreign diplomats, including representatives of the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, and France.

The development reflects ongoing engagement between political actors and members of the diplomatic community.

Officials of the British High Commission had earlier attended the ADC convention in Abuja. The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated that such engagements are routine.

According to the agency, “Attendance of these events reflects the UK Government’s commitment to and engagement with the democratic process in Nigeria.”

Obi, who resigned from the Labour Party in December to join the ADC, remains a prominent figure in opposition politics.

He continues to enjoy strong support, particularly among young Nigerians.
