… Pushes stronger security ties with tertiary institutions
BENIN CITY – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intensified its national security strategy with specialised training for more than 200 personnel in Edo State, while also strengthening collaboration with tertiary institutions in Kogi State to improve campus safety and intelligence-driven policing.
In Benin City, the Edo State Command of the Corps trained over 200 officers on specialised courses designed to enhance operational effectiveness and security response.
The training covered VIP protection, disaster management, public safety, security intelligence, crime prevention and correctional administration.
Speaking during the certificate presentation ceremony on Wednesday in Benin, the State Commandant, Mr Saidi Akintayo, said continuous training and retraining of personnel remained essential to effective security operations.
He explained that the programmes had significantly improved the command’s operational efficiency, intelligence gathering, disaster response capacity, anti-vandal activities and conflict management across the state.
“No security organisation can effectively discharge its mandate without continuous capacity building and exposure of personnel to modern security techniques and global best practices,” Akintayo said.
He added that the command would continue investing in human capital development to ensure officers remained professionally equipped to tackle emerging security threats.
Akintayo also commended the Commandant General of the Corps, Ahmed Audi, for reforms and leadership initiatives that had enhanced professionalism, operational effectiveness and personnel welfare across the country.
He assured residents of sustained proactive security operations and closer collaboration with other security agencies to enhance safety in Edo State.
Meanwhile, in Kogi State, the NSCDC has called for stronger collaboration with tertiary institutions as part of efforts to curb insecurity in schools and safeguard critical academic environments.
The Kogi State Commandant, Mr Ebenezer Aletan, made the call on Wednesday while hosting the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, Prof. Gbenga Ibileye, during a courtesy visit to the NSCDC State Headquarters in Lokoja.
Aletan described tertiary institutions as critical national assets requiring adequate protection, assuring the university management of the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safety on campus.
He also highlighted the establishment of the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre by the NSCDC Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, noting that it was aimed at strengthening the safety of students and educational facilities across the country.
According to him, regular engagement with students, lecturers and other stakeholders within the school environment remains essential for effective intelligence gathering and improved security response.
Earlier, Prof. Ibileye said the visit was aimed at strengthening existing collaboration between the university and the Corps, noting that the strategic location of the institution required increased security presence to ensure safety and orderliness within the university environment.
The visit featured an exchange of plaques between both institutions as a symbol of renewed partnership.
