A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), People, Planet and Peace Foundation, on Monday commended Nike Art Gallery for portraying contemporary Nigerian life.
Mr Olatunji Francisco, the Lead, Climate Beyond Borders Caravan, CBBC, an initiative of the foundation, gave the commendation when the CBBC members paid a courtesy visit to the Nike Art Gallery in Abuja.
In a remark after viewing the exhibitions, Francisco said the Nike Art Gallery depicted Nigerian Artists encoded history, values, and social issues into visual form.
He said the subjects of the cultural storytelling through the art included folklore, spirituality, identity, and contemporary Nigerian life.
According to Francisco, the CBBC is a multi-country initiative spanning 21 African nations, aimed at fostering environmental sustainability, promoting climate awareness and strengthening cross-border collaboration.
Also speaking, the CBBC Secretary, Nigeria, Miss Olabisi Kumuyi, said the Nike Art Gallery had really turned art into a tool for social change and empowerment.
“ I learnt that Mama Nike Davies-Okundaye`s Foundation opened the Abuja centre partly to get girls off the street by teaching handicrafts.
“Truly speaking, art and craft skills can create income, dignity, and alternatives to prostitution and poverty. Many of the Nigerian women have been trained across her centers.
“The place has shown that art isn’t separate from community, food, music, and daily life in Nigeria,’’ she said.
Kumuyi admired how the centre blended tradition with modern practice in art and craft skills.
Some of the staff members at the Nike Art Gallery, who commented on the exhibitions earlier, said the Abuja centre regularly organised workshops and had trained over 900 people.
According to them, students can learn tie-and-dye (adire), the ancient Yoruba resist-dyeing with indigo; batik printing, weaving, beadwork, mosaic, appliqué, wood sculpture, relief carving, painting, pen and ink. (NAN)
