A cleric, Rev. Fr. Peter Babangida-Audu, has called on military men and women and other Nigerians to be good stewards as the Catholic Church marks the Vocation Sunday.
Babangida-Audu, said in a sermon in Lagos that good stewardship would promote a better society.
He spoke at the St. Augustine Catholic Church, Sam Ethnan Nigerian Air Force Base Base, Ikeja.
Babangida-Audu, a visiting priest to the church, is the Executive Secretary of Caritas Nigeria, a humanitarian arm of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Vocation Sunday is celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday after Easter. It is also known as Good Shepherd Sunday.
It is a day of prayer, reflection and encouragement, focusing on recognising God’s calling in one’s life.
The cleric described vocation as a call to serve, adding that a commander was called to shepherd those under his authority.
He commended the Nigerian military for efforts to counter terrorism, urging it to do more to protect Nigerians and eradicate insecurity.
According to him, accountability and transparency are expected from every steward.
” If God gives you some people to care for, you are not a boss first; you are a shepherd first. Be diligent in all facets.
“The country is experiencing insecurity. Work as a good steward,” Babangida-Audu said.
The priest urged mothers to be role models for their children.
“A mother is called to shepherd her home, with love and wisdom.
“Some are called to care for the poor and the vulnerable. A father is called to shepherd his family. A leader is called to serve, not exploit.
“In whichever sphere you find yourself, be a good steward. Every shepherd must one day answer one question; what did you do with those entrusted to you?
“A priest who speaks truth is lighting a lamp. A teacher, who forms children well, is lighting a lamp, and a worker, who does his duty faithfully, is lighting a lamp,” he said. (NAN)
