Norway produced one of the greatest upsets in FIFA World Cup history, defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals for the first time. Inspired by a sensational late brace from Erling Haaland and a heroic goalkeeping display from Ørjan Nyland, the Scandinavians stunned Carlo Ancelotti’s side at MetLife Stadium, ending Brazil’s hopes of lifting a sixth world title in dramatic fashion.

Few expected Norway to eliminate one of football’s traditional powerhouses, but Ståle Solbakken’s men arrived with confidence after an impressive tournament, spearheaded by the prolific Haaland. Against Brazil, however, they showed there was far more to their game than simply relying on their superstar striker. Defensive organisation, tactical discipline, and unwavering belief formed the foundation of a famous victory.

Substitute Andreas Schjelderup delivered a teasing cross into the penalty area, where Haaland rose highest to power a header beyond Alisson. The Norwegian supporters erupted as their talisman registered his sixth goal contribution of the knockout stages and edged his country closer to history.

Brazil pushed desperately for an equaliser, committing numbers forward and leaving space at the back. Norway exploited it ruthlessly in the 90th minute. Schjelderup once again played the role of creator, releasing Haaland into space. The striker kept his composure, driving a low finish beyond Alisson to complete his brace and seemingly put the contest beyond doubt. It was a clinical display from one of the world’s premier forwards, who underlined why he has been among the standout players of the tournament.

There was still late drama. Deep into stoppage time, Brazil were awarded another penalty after a VAR review, allowing Neymar to reduce the deficit from the spot. The veteran calmly converted, sparking hopes of an improbable comeback, but the final whistle arrived moments later to confirm one of the biggest shocks of the tournament.

For Norway, the victory was richly deserved. Haaland will dominate the headlines after his decisive brace, but Nyland’s penalty save and several outstanding stops throughout the match were equally influential. Schjelderup also changed the game from the bench, providing assists for both goals and injecting pace into Norway’s attack

Brazil, meanwhile, leave the tournament with plenty of questions to answer. The missed first-half penalty proved costly, while their inability to convert prolonged spells of possession into goals ultimately defined their evening. Ancelotti’s side showed flashes of quality but lacked the cutting edge expected of a team with such attacking talent.

Norway now advance to the quarter finals with belief surging through the squad. If Haaland maintains his remarkable scoring form and the team continues to defend with the same organisation and resilience, the Vikings may yet write another extraordinary chapter in what is already a historic World Cup campaign. Brazil, meanwhile, return home earlier than expected, their dream of a sixth world title ending at the hands of a fearless Norwegian side that simply refused to be intimidated.
