US-Iran war takes dangerous turn: Explosions rock Chabahar, Bandar Abbas; Tehran claims it targeted…, here’s what happened

The war between the United States and Iran has intensified sharply after the US launched fresh military strikes on several strategic locations in Iran. The latest attacks have increased fears of a wider regional war that could threaten global energy supplies and security in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation was carried out under the direction of the Commander in Chief. The US said the strikes were aimed at weakening Iran’s military capabilities, which it claims have been used to target commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.

Where did the US launch its latest strikes?

Soon after the operation began, Iranian state media reported explosions in the strategic port city of Bandar Abbas, which hosts major Iranian naval facilities overlooking the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Mehr News Agency also said air defence systems were activated near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, indicating heightened military readiness.

Multiple explosions were later reported in Chabahar and Konarak in southeastern Iran. Chabahar is one of Iran’s most important commercial ports, while Konarak is home to a key Iranian naval base. Reports also said explosions were heard on Qeshm Island in the Gulf region.

Amid the escalation, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB shared an image on social media showing a burning ship, claiming it was from the Strait of Hormuz and blaming the US for the situation.

How has Iran responded?

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it launched three waves of missile and drone attacks on US military assets in Bahrain and Kuwait.

According to the IRGC, drone maintenance facilities at Al-Sakhir Air Base and US naval facilities at Salman Port in Bahrain were targeted. Iran also claimed it struck US HIMARS missile systems stationed at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait with ground-to-ground missiles as part of its ongoing “Thunder” military operation. These claims have not been independently verified.

Why are tensions rising further?

The latest escalation comes after US President Donald Trump warned Iran of “overwhelming retaliation” for every American soldier killed. His statement followed the Pentagon’s confirmation that three US service members were killed in separate attacks in Jordan and Iraq over the weekend.
