Veteran British politician Andy Burnham has emerged as the new leader of the ruling Labour Party, positioning him to become Britain’s next prime minister.
Burnham was confirmed the party leader on Friday by Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood, as the only eligible nominated candidate for the position.
Announcing the result, Mahmood said: “There being no other eligibly nominated candidate, it is therefore my honour to declare that the duly elected leader of the Labour Party is Andy Burnham.”
Burnham is expected to take over as prime minister, succeeding Keir Starmer, who assumed office on the 5th of July 2024 after leading the party to a landslide victory in the country’s general election.
NPO reports that Starmer had on the 22nd of July 2026 resigned as as Labour Party leader, following his admittance that he was not best placed to lead the party into the next general election.
He had asked the party’s governing body to set out a timetable to replace him, with nominations opening on 9 July and ending by the summer recess on 16 July.A longtime Labour figure, Burnham previously served as Secretary of State for Health and has been Mayor of Greater Manchester since 2017. He is widely known for his advocacy on health, social care, transport, and regional devolution.
