THE Arab Republic of Egypt has reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with Nigeria in advancing African-led solutions to the continent’s challenges and promoting shared development objectives.
Egypt’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Mohammed Fouad, said this on Thursday in Abuja during a ceremony organised by the embassy to commemorate the 74th anniversary of Egypt’s July 23, 1952 Revolution.
Fouad described the revolution as a defining moment in Egypt’s modern history that restored the country’s dignity, independence and hope, while continuing to inspire national commitment to sovereignty and development.
The envoy said Egypt and Nigeria remained pillars of African diplomacy, working together to promote African unity, sovereignty, multilateralism and a fairer global order that reflected the continent’s aspirations.
“Egypt and Nigeria are pillars of African diplomacy. Together we champion African unity, sovereignty and multilateralism. We advocate African solutions to African problems and fairer global order that reflects Africa’s aspirations.
“By coordinating our positions in regional organisations, we amplify Africa’s voice on development finance, peacekeeping, climate justice and in shaping policies that deliver tangible benefits to our citizens,” he said.
Fouad commended the 65 years of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Nigeria, noting that the partnership had continued to grow since formal ties were established shortly after Nigeria’s independence in 1960.
According to him, the relationship extends beyond official engagements, with more than 10,000 Nigerian students currently studying in Egyptian universities, strengthening people-to-people connections between both countries.
He said educational exchanges, tourism and business engagements had intensified over the years, creating a solid foundation for deeper cooperation and nurturing a new generation of leaders.
“At a time of global uncertainty, Egypt and Nigeria recognise the importance of redefining, and deepening our partnership to address shared challenges,” the ambassador said.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Amb. Omar Ahmed, congratulated Egypt on the anniversary celebration.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said Nigeria and Egypt shared a pivotal partnership as two of Africa’s largest and most influential economies, with significant opportunities for deeper cooperation.
“Nigeria is dedicated to strengthening its bilateral relations with Egypt, actively seeking new channels for investment and innovation that supports both our Renewed Hope Agenda, and Egypt’s Strategic Development Goals.
“By harnessing our collective resources and dynamic youth population, we are poised to foster a more prosperous, stable, and secure Africa,” she said.
The minister commended both countries for supporting each other’s positions on international issues and described their partnership for African development as an important vehicle for continental progress.
According to her, Nigeria and Egypt remain committed to conflict prevention in Africa, reform of United Nations institutions, implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and peaceful resolution of global disputes.(NAN)
