THE National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Ebonyi Chapter, has opposed calls for the resignation of the Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, over the death of Miss Mary Habila.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Habila, Umahi’s personal physiotherapist, died on June 27, at the Minister’s residence in Uburu, Ebonyi.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abakaliki, the council insisted that only a transparent, impartial and credible investigation could establish the true circumstances surrounding Habila’s death.
The statement was jointly signed by the State Chairman, Mr Douglas Ochishi, and the Publicity Secretary, Mr Ali Ikechukwu.
The council described demands by the Northern Youths Council of Nigeria for Umahi’s resignation and suspension as premature and capable of undermining ongoing investigations.
It expressed sympathy to Habila’s family, friends and loved ones, praying for strength to bear the loss and eternal rest for the deceased.
The youth body commended Umahi for supporting an independent investigation, including a forensic autopsy, to establish the facts surrounding the tragic incident.
It urged the Nigeria Police Force and relevant authorities to conduct thorough, professional and impartial investigations without interference to ensure justice for everyone involved.
According to the council, no individual should be condemned before investigations are concluded and credible evidence is established through lawful and transparent processes.
The NYCN argued that calls for the minister’s resignation appeared politically motivated and aimed at damaging the reputation of a serving public official.
It maintained that it would not remain silent while one of Ebonyi’s prominent sons faced public condemnation without credible evidence or the outcome of lawful investigations.
The council appealed to youth groups, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to avoid actions or statements capable of prejudicing the ongoing investigation.
It also cautioned social media users against spreading misinformation, promoting speculation or engaging in trial by media before the conclusion of investigations.
The NYCN reaffirmed its commitment to justice, accountability and the rule of law, expressing confidence that relevant authorities would establish the truth through due process.
It again sympathised with Habila’s family, expressing hope that the investigation would deliver truth, justice and closure for everyone affected by the incident. (NAN)
