Ali Khamenei funeral: The funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s former Supreme Leader, who was assassinated in a US-Israeli strike on February 28, 2026, is shaping up to be an event like no other, with a nearly 3,000-kilometer-long funeral procession planned from Tehran to the holy city of Karbala, finally concluding in Khamenei’s native Mashhad, one of Iran’s holiest cities, where he will laid to rest.
Tehran and religious heads are gearing up to transform it more than just a funeral, but “the largest and most unique event to date”, which has been dubbed as “The Send-Off to Iran’s Leader of Martyrs.”
Here is the complete route/itinerary of the Ali Khamenei funeral, which will commence from Tehran on July 4;
- July 3-5 (Tehran): The funeral ceremonies will begin on July 3 in Tehran with a special memorial service at the sprawling Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, which will be attended foreign dignitaries and diplomats. Following this, the public will have the opportunity to pay their last respects to Khamenei on July 4 and 5.
- July 6 (Tehran): The main funeral procession, which is expected to be about 10 kilometers, rivalling the largest Muharram processions in Iran and around the world, will commence from Tehran’s Imam Hussein Square to the Azadi Square.
- July 7 (Qom): On July 7, Ali Khamenei’s remains will be taken to Qom, the largest center of Shia theology and religious learning.
- July 8 (Najaf and Karbala in Iraq): The very next day, Khamenei’s funeral procession will cross the borders into neighboring Iraq, reaching the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala– home to the most sacred Shia shrines belonging to Imam Hussein and the martyrs of Karbala. The funeral procession will be taken to the shrines of Imam Ali in Najaf and Imam Hussein in Karbala.
- July 9 (Burial in Mashhad): After returning from Iraq, Ayatollah Khamenei’s body will be taken to his birthplace, Mashhad, where he will laid to rest at the shrine of Imam Reza, the 8th Imam of the Shi’ite school, in accordance with his will.
