The curtain is set to fall on the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an epic final showdown between Argentina and Spain. Both teams are billed to face each other for the second time in a World Cup tournament after defeating England and France respectively to reach the final.
While the third-place match held yesterday between England and France had widely been considered the most entertaining and thrilling in FIFA World Cup’s modern history with a total of 10 goals scored, the final showdown between the La Albiceleste and La Rojas is also tipped to be historical.
The final match is bound to go down as a clash of legacy as Argentina, led by eight-time Ballon D’Or winner, Lionel Messi, takes a Spanish side with an attacking frontline spearheaded by 19-year-old prodigy, Lamine Yamal. Beyond the 18-karat gold FIFA trophy, all eyes are set to be glued on 39-year-old Messi and teenage Yamal in what will be their first encounter on the pitch.
Meanwhile, both players had once met back in 2007 when the then 20-year-old Messi showed up for a UNICEF and FC Barcelona Foundation charity project aimed at raising funds for children in Catalonia. In the course of the project, Messi was captured holding and bathing a six-month-old baby.
The toddler would turn out to be Yamal with the picture taken by Joan Monfort now one of the most talked about event as Argentina face Spain. With Messi eyeing a successful defence of the title he won for Argentina in 2022, Yamal also seek to get a hold of his first FIFA World Cup title and help Spain double the star on their badge.
Beyond the trophy, speculations around the Messi and Yamal showdown have been narrowed into two perspectives. If Argentina wins, Messi is billed to further etch his name in history book and extend his legacy. However, a loss to Spain will be perceived as a transfer of the legacy to Yamal who currently wears Messi’s old number 10 shirt in Barcelona. This will however be decided on the pitch in few minutes time.
