The Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that more than 500 Nigerians have so far been screened and cleared for evacuation. The operation is expected to be carried out by Nigerian carrier Air Peace, with the first flight scheduled to depart from Johannesburg carrying approximately 270 passengers, pending final aviation and regulatory clearances.
According to government officials, the evacuation exercise is voluntary and is aimed at safeguarding Nigerians who may have been affected by the recent unrest. The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to provide consular support and ensure the welfare of Nigerian citizens abroad.
The development comes amid concerns over the resurgence of xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals in some South African communities. Authorities have assured affected Nigerians of continued assistance throughout the repatriation process.
