Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has led protesters to the Presidential Villa in Abuja as he demanded President Bola Tinubu’s resignation over the spread of insecurity across the country.
The protesters comprising of the #TakeitBack Movement members stormed the villa in furtherance of the ongoing nationwide protest over last month’s abduction of Oyo school teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
Sowore spearheaded the protesters who marched to the presidential villa with placards and banners with inscriptions demanding the rescue of the kidnap victims or Tinubu’s resignation.
Some of the inscriptions on the placards read ‘Rescue them now or resign’, ‘Save our children’, ‘No more abduction’, and ‘Make schools safe again’ amongst others.
However, the protesters were met with strong resistance from security operatives who were heavily deployed to restrict the movement of the demonstrators.
Video shared on X by Sowore showed military personnel forming barricade at the entrance of the villa.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Sowore described the protest as rehearsal of what might become a final push for revolution in Nigeria.
The Sahara Reporters publisher charged Tinubu to ensure immediate release of the teachers and students kidnapped across the country or resign.
He accused the President of imposing himself on Nigerians while claiming that he will never return to the presidential seat by 2027.
“The situation in Nigeria is the worst of all the countries surrounding us today. We are here as rehearsal for what might become a final push for revolution in this country.
“We are asking that Tinubu with immediate effect, go and rescue children who were kidnapped in their schools and get them released immediately.
“Because that is what he imposed himself on Nigerians to do at the Presidency that he stole in 2023 and for which we can never allow him to come back again in this country.” Sowore said.
