Two typhoons have unleashed devastation across Japan and Taiwan. Torrential rains from the passing tropical storm shut down a swathe of southern Taiwan on Friday, forcing millions of people to stay indoors. Although Typhoon Mekkhala did not make direct landfall, its outer bands triggered heavy rain in several parts of the country, including Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung in the south.

In Japan, four people were reportedly injured while over a million were advised to evacuate following two tropical storms barreling towards the archipelago on June 27. The typhoons Mekkhala and Higos prompted authorities to issue warnings of risks of flooding and landslides. According to forecasters, Mekkhala was downgraded from a typhoon but carried gusts of up to 108 kilometres per hour. Meanwhile, heavy rain has already battered Japan’s southern and western parts.

Twin storms may lead to Fujiwhara effect

The weather system was likely to pass near the islands of Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu over the weekend, impacting a large part of the country, including densely populated Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. It was expected to converge with tropical storm Higos, which was also moving farther offshore in the Pacific Ocean. There is a possibility that it could lead to the Fujiwhara effect, an atmospheric phenomenon that occurs when two storms interact, making it difficult for forecasters to assess their direction and intensity.

Although typhoon Mekkhala has gradually turned into a tropical storm, forecasters predict that it has the potential to wreak havoc with winds of up to 108 kmph. Meanwhile, another storm, Higos, is also rapidly advancing, triggering red alerts in both countries.

Taiwan first to be hit by a double cyclone system

Taiwan was the first to be hit by a double cyclone system. Extremely heavy rains have lashed the southern and western parts of the country, resulting in floods and landslides that have inundated the entire island. A 73-year-old woman died after being carried away by strong currents in Kaohsiung, reports added. In Hsinchu County, a 49-year-old woman’s body was recovered from a vehicle that was completely submerged in floodwaters, while a 65-year-old man who went to his farm has also gone missing. A search operation has been launched.

Japanese cities at high risk!

The storm has now reportedly turned toward Japan’s main islands of Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu, putting Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya cities directly at risk. In view of this danger, Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency has issued a strict legal advisory to over 1 million residents to leave their homes and move to safe shelters.

Airline services disrupted, plants of major companies shut down

The storm has crippled Japan’s transportation and industrial sectors. Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have cancelled 120 flights to and from Okinawa and Kagoshima. Meanwhile, many important train routes have also been disrupted. Authorities in Kyoto and Osaka have warned of flooding, urging residents to seek higher ground as river levels rise above the danger mark.
