PM Modi Donald Trump

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday, June 27, said that President Donald Trump is expected to visit India early next year, highlighting the strong personal ties between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rubio told news agency NAIJAONPOINT in Washington DC that he will likely travel to India before year-end to finalise preparations for the presidential visit.

“We’re hoping that’s what we’re working towards – sometime early next year to have the President come. I think it’s very positive. India is such a close partner and ally of the United States, and the relationship between the Prime Minister and the President couldn’t be closer, which I think is really important in diplomacy,” Marco Rubio said.

Trump’s India trip would be his first of second White House term

If the planned visit happens, it will mark the US President’s first trip to India since February 2020 and his first trip since resuming a second term in the White House. Trump and PM Modi last met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France’s Evian, marking their first bilateral meeting in 16 months.

Rubio praises Modi-Trump relationship

Praising Modi-Trump relationship, the US Secretary of State said, “The relationship between the President and the Prime Minister of India is great.” The proposed visit comes as India and the United States continue discussions on a bilateral trade agreement, which Rubio describes as nearing completion.

Rubio further stated that both nations were eager for another meeting of the Quad grouping and that he expressed hope of returning to India before the year-end of the year to assist in setting up the presidential visit. He also hailed PM Modi’s leadership, calling himself his “fan” and crediting him with elevating India’s standing on the international stage. “Modi has made India a global power,” he said.
