Nigerian music executive and producer Don Jazzy has reacted to claims that some artistes at Mavin Records receive more attention than others.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that during a recent appearance on The Crea8torium podcast, the Mavin boss said the label does not deliberately neglect any artiste signed under it.
He explained that it would not make business sense for a record company to spend money and resources on an artiste only to ignore the person afterwards.
Don Jazzy said the level of activity from artistes often depends on their personal decisions.
According to him, some singers choose to release only a few songs within a year, while others may decide to stay away from the spotlight for some time.
The music producer also spoke about the emotional struggles some artistes face in the industry. He explained that feelings of self-doubt and fear sometimes make artistes believe they are not getting enough support compared to their colleagues.
He added that overthinking can also make musicians feel left behind, even when the label is willing to support their projects and music releases.
Don Jazzy maintained that Mavin Records is open to releasing music for artistes who are ready and willing to put out songs. He said the label has no reason to stop any artiste from growing because the success of the artistes also benefits the company.
“We do see lots of comments that we do not prioritise some artistes. But that isn’t true. It’s like I would just carry my money and just throw it away, just lock it inside somewhere. We invest in people to make us and themselves money,” he said.
“So the idea that we would have artistrs and not want to prioritise them is not real. If you see an artiste in Mavin and the artiste only releases one or two songs in a year, just know that it is the artiste:s decision.
“If the artiste has 1 million songs and they want to release them, we can release them. Most of them actually have imposter syndrome. It’s normal.
“We are all human beings, so sometimes they can panic and overthink things. But there is no such thing as prioritising one artist over another.”
