GOV. Nasir Idris of Kebbi has expressed delight over what he described as excellent industrial harmony between government and workers in the state.
The governor urged labour to sustain the momentum for the benefit of workers, government, and the state at large.
Addressing workers at Haliru Abdu Stadium in Birnin Kebbi to commemorate 2026 May Day on Friday, the governor assured labour unions of improved welfare.
The News Agency of Nigeria NAN reports that the theme of this year’s Workers’ Day is: “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work”.
The governor, who started unionism from the grassroots and reached its climax, recalled that he was part of the struggle and emphasised that labour remains an integral part of any policy and programme.
He assured that his administration was ready to continue its commitment to inclusive governance.
Idris said his government would not only ensure prompt payment of salaries but would also ensure that all workers’ entitlements were paid as and when due.
The governor also assured labour that training and retraining of workers would be prioritised to boost their morale across the state.
Highlighting some achievements relating to workers, Idris said the government had distributed 500 houses to enhance workers’ welfare, recruited more than 2,200 health workers and 2,000 teachers.
He added that the state had revitalised 22 General Hospitals, 179 primary healthcare centres, and 63 dispensaries to improve service delivery, saying that the government was working round the clock to achieve universal healthcare delivery.
To ensure gender equality in governance, the governor said the administration had appointed five female permanent secretaries.
On minimum wage, Idris noted with satisfaction that his government had implemented a new minimum wage of N75,000, which was above the Federal Government’s N70,000, since October 2024.
In his speech, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress NLC in Kebbi, Mr Murtala Usman, observed that lingering insecurity in the country was undermining workers’ welfare.
He, however, said the organised labour movement acknowledged the efforts of the federal government under President Bola Tinubu.
“At the state level, we also acknowledge the efforts of Gov. Nasir Idris, especially in addressing workers’ plights,” he said.
Usman lauded the governor for effective implementation of the new minimum wage, which he said, had transformed workers’ livelihood.
Other gestures by the state government included prompt payment of workers’ entitlements, especially salaries, gratuities, pensions, and death benefits.
The labour leader also commended the governor for the successful completion of the multi-billion Naira ultra-modern state secretariat named after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the relocation of workers into the edifice.
“We must applaud your efforts for establishing the state mass transit with 50 buses and employing 100 drivers,” he added.
The chairman also cited the employment of over 1,000 workers to address understaffing, adding that labour was ready to sustain and promote industrial harmony, discipline, and productivity in the state workforce. NAN
