THE Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mamman Giwa, has called on operatives of the command to “police with human face and respect for human rights”.
Giwa made the call during an interactive townhall meeting with security stakeholders and citizens under the Oji-River Area Command, covering divisions in Ezeagu, Oji-River, and Udi Local Government Areas.
He urged his personnel to operate with utmost professionalism and firmness.
According to him, police operatives on stop-and-search duties are not permitted to intimidate, harass or search the phones of citizens without investigative justification.
The police boss spoke about the ongoing disciplinary proceedings against erring officers.
He promised that the command, under his leadership, would continue to ensure that personnel’s conduct conforms to the acceptable ethical and professional standards.
He further emphasised the efforts being made by the command to address the security concerns raised by participants.
Giwa also urged them to continue to support the police with timely and credible information to aid proactive policing.
He said that sustained cooperation between the police and the public was essential for building trust and ensuring effective policing of society.
Earlier, the participants commended the commissioner for his firmness, proactive policing approach and for initiating the interactive townhall meeting.
They raised issues concerning alleged excesses by Qthe operatives from the command.
The meeting was attended by traditional and religious rulers, Presidents-General and other community leaders, market and transport union representatives, youth and women leaders, and the leadership of the Oji-River Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Also in attendance were representatives of other security agencies, Forest Guards, members of Neighbourhood Watch Group, the Police Community Relations Committee and other stakeholders.
The command earlier held similar town halls in Udenu and Nsukka Area Commands, while the meetings would continue in Agbani Area Command and end at the Enugu Metropolis Area Command. NAN
