..Group Defends AGF, Warns Against Reckless Allegations
The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity and Justice has urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to expeditiously resolve the controversy surrounding the interpretation and enforcement of Section 225A of the Constitution.
The coalition said the matter has become too significant to be delayed because of its implications for electoral credibility, constitutional governance and political stability ahead of the 2027 elections.
The organisation commended the Attorney General of the Federation for what it described as a responsible constitutional approach to the matter despite growing political criticisms.
According to the coalition, the AGF acted within his constitutional responsibilities as the country’s Chief Law Officer and custodian of the Constitution.
“The Attorney General cannot be vilified merely for taking a constitutional position on a matter before the court. Constitutional debates must be resolved through law, not emotional attacks and media sensationalism,” the coalition stated.
The organisation specifically condemned comments allegedly made by Zenith Labour Party National Chairman Dan Nwanyanwu accusing the AGF of “cooking up” the suit.
The coalition described the allegations as defamatory, baseless and unbecoming of democratic engagement.
The organisation stressed that constitutional democracy survives only when institutions possess the courage to enforce constitutional provisions fairly and consistently.
“It is not enough to celebrate constitutional democracy rhetorically while resisting constitutional compliance whenever enforcement becomes politically inconvenient,” the coalition added.
The coalition further argued that the constitutional thresholds for political parties were deliberately introduced to discourage endless proliferation of inactive political platforms lacking meaningful electoral impact.
According to the organisation, excessive party proliferation continues to create administrative burdens for electoral authorities while increasing election costs unnecessarily.
The coalition therefore urged the judiciary to determine the matter strictly in line with constitutional provisions and judicial precedent.
