The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has declared that acts of impunity and unprofessional conduct in the Nigeria Police Force will no longer be tolerated, saying officers found wanting would face disciplinary action.
DGP Disu stated this during his one-day official visit to the Edo State Police Command in Benin City on May 15, 2026.
The police boss while addressing officers and men of the command, asked whether they were satisfied with the current image and rating of the police, stressing that the force could become the best in Africa and globally if officers remained professional and committed to duty.
Referring to recent incidents in Delta State and Port Harcourt, Disu described the actions of some officers as embarrassing and contrary to police training and ethics.
He cited a case in Delta State where an Assistant Superintendent of Police allegedly shot a suspect in broad daylight after the suspect had been arrested and handed over to the police by members of the public.
According to him, the officers involved in the incident had been recommended for dismissal, while the Police Service Commission (PSC) had approved the recommendation.
IGP Disu added that the case file had been forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for prosecution.
The IGP also condemned another incident involving officers accused of arbitrary arrests and extortion of residents through ATM withdrawals.
“They got vehicles and started moving around town, arresting people arbitrarily and extorting money from them. They have been tried and recommended for dismissal,” he said.
Disu stressed that the force must regain public confidence through discipline, professionalism and responsible conduct by officers.
“The era of impunity is over. We must build a new Nigeria Police Force that Nigerians will be proud of,” he stated.
Earlier, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, commended the IGP for visiting the command.
Agbonika said the command had recorded successes in crime-fighting through collaboration with other security agencies, adding that more operational equipment was needed to further tackle criminality in the state.
