THE Ohanaeze Ndigbo Elders’ Council, Lagos Chapter, has disowned the planned coronation of Chief Frederick N. Nwajagu as Ezendigbo Lagos State.
The council described the proposed ceremony, scheduled for May 17, as misleading and contrary to resolutions of Igbo leadership on traditional titles outside Igboland.
In a statement made available to Realnews Magazine on Saturday, the council said Nwajagu had not been recognised or coronated as Ezendigbo Lagos State or Eze Gburugburu II.
It stated that the invitation circulating publicly was premature and amounted to self-conferment of an invalid traditional title.
The council said the national leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide had abolished Ezeship titles and similar institutions outside Igboland.
It added that the decision was reached in consultation with the South East Council of Traditional Rulers.
According to the council, the directive is binding on all Igbo people, irrespective of location or affiliation.
It said no individual or group had authority to violate the collective decision of Igbo leadership.
The council dissociated itself completely from Nwajagu and the planned coronation ceremony.
It warned the public, Igbo residents, and stakeholders to disregard the invitation and avoid participating in the event.
The council said anyone attending or supporting the ceremony would do so at their own risk.
It also urged Nwajagu to withdraw the invitation and stop actions contradicting resolutions of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and traditional rulers.
The statement warned that failure to comply could attract administrative and legal actions.
The statement was signed by Onyendu Uche Dimgba, Chairman, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Elders’ Council, Lagos Chapter.
It was countersigned by Rev. Paul Eze, Secretary of the council.
