A disturbing video has captured the moment operatives of the Effurun Area Command of the Delta State Police Command shot a handcuffed man at point-blank range as he begged for mercy. The man was shot in the head before his body was lifted and thrown into an operational vehicle.
The video emerged barely two days after soldiers attached to the Guards Brigade in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were accused of shooting to death a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, inside his room.
The army had claimed the corps member was caught in crossfire during an operation to quell an armed robbery incident. However, the deceased’s parents debunked the claim, insisting he was killed in his locked room.
In the Effurun incident, police killed the handcuffed man in a public place, in broad daylight by the roadside. The exact date of the incident remains unclear. However, human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu identified one Usman Nuhu as being among the operatives involved in the shooting.
Gwamnishu said: “Usman Nuhu and his gang, attached to the Area Command in Effurun, Delta State, brutally and extrajudicially killed a yet-to-be-identified young man yesterday.
“Usman Nuhu was formerly with the RRS (formerly #SARS) and has multiple allegations of extrajudicial killings against him. He had also served at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Illah but was reportedly transferred due to repeated misconduct and excessive use of force.
“While Usman Nuhu is currently in police custody, he did not act alone. Other officers involved in the incident are reportedly being shielded.
“There are strong indications of an ongoing cover-up. It is important that all responsible parties are identified and held accountable to ensure justice is served and to help end #ExtrajudicialKillings.”
