ALGERIA foreign minister, Ahmed Attaf, said his country remained firmly committed to supporting Mali’s unity and efforts to combat terrorism, as insecurity persists across the Sahel region.

Attaf made the remarks during talks in Algiers with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Foreign Minister, Elmedin Konakovic, who was on an official visit, according to a statement from Algeria’s ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Hocine Mezoued.

His comments come against the backdrop of deepening instability in Mali and neighbouring states, where military-led governments are grappling with insurgencies linked to Islamist militant groups, as well as shifting alliances following the withdrawal of Western forces.

Algeria, which shares a long border with Mali, has consistently called for political solutions and regional cooperation to address the crisis.

Attaf said Algeria supported the unity of Mali’s territory, people, and institutions, and rejected all forms of terrorism.

“Terrorism cannot be justified or tolerated, regardless of its motives or causes,” he said, citing Algeria’s own experience with militant violence.

He called for stronger national cohesion in Mali, describing unity as “the most effective shield” against terrorism.

Mali has faced years of conflict involving Islamist insurgents, separatist movements, and foreign military involvement, with the security situation remaining volatile despite ongoing counter-insurgency efforts. NAN
