The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has uncovered and safely neutralised explosive devices within the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre, averting what authorities described as a potential disaster.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfom John, disclosed in a statement on Monday that the operation was triggered by credible intelligence from correctional authorities.
According to her, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, immediately ordered the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit alongside other tactical teams.
A coordinated search of the facility led to the recovery of dangerous materials, including two 90mm high-explosive rounds and a 45cm burning fuse.
Other items recovered included a pair of pincers, a flat screwdriver, two 12mm iron chisels, and a conduit iron pipe.
The police said the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team successfully neutralised the devices, preventing possible casualties and damage.
“The EOD team professionally rendered the explosive devices safe, thereby neutralising any imminent threat and preventing possible loss of lives and destruction of critical infrastructure,” the statement read.
Following the discovery, the command said security has been reinforced around the custodial facility with increased surveillance, access control, and patrols.
Authorities have also launched an investigation to determine the source of the explosives and identify those responsible.
“Discreet investigation and technical analysis have commenced to determine the origin of the explosives, and to apprehend those connected to the dangerous act,” she added.
The police assured residents that the situation is under control and that no casualties were recorded.
They urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity, warning that criminal elements would not be allowed to threaten public safety.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and critical infrastructure across the state.
