The Nigeria Police Force in Akwa Ibom State has foiled a planned bomb attack at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre and recovered dangerous explosive materials from the area.
PrimeTimes Nigeria reports that the incident was confirmed in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Timfon John. She explained that the action followed useful information received from officials of the correctional centre.
After getting the report, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, directed the immediate deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit based in Uyo, along with other security teams, to take control of the situation and search the facility.
During the operation, officers discovered two 90mm explosive rounds, a burning fuse measuring about 45 centimetres, a pair of pincers, a flat screwdriver, two iron chisels, and a short conduit pipe. The items were found within the premises during a careful sweep.
The bomb disposal experts safely handled the explosives and removed any threat that could have led to damage or loss of lives. Following the discovery, security around the facility and nearby areas has been strengthened, with tighter checks and regular patrols now in place.
Authorities have also started an investigation to trace where the explosives came from and identify those behind the act.
The police leadership in the state assured residents that the situation has been brought under control and no one was harmed. Members of the public were advised to stay alert and quickly report any suspicious activity.
The command also warned that it will take firm action against anyone planning to attack public facilities, adding that criminal acts will not be allowed to take root in the state.
