Former Ogun State gubernatorial aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Iyabo Obasanjo has shared her reservations over the party’s consensus process ahead of the 2027 elections.
Following the Ogun APC Caucus meeting on April 13, 2026, where Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola was declared the consensus candidate for the party, Obasanjo, who had pledged to abide by the consensus process, expressed concerns over how the procedure was handled.
Speaking via a statement, she highlighted troubling incidents that occurred during the meeting.
According to her, some of her supporters were denied entry to the meeting venue, and two were physically assaulted by a party official, requiring medical attention.
“Some of my supporters were denied entry and regrettably, two were physically assaulted by a party functionary.
“While I chose not to escalate the situation in the interest of party unity, the incident required medical attention for those affected. Such occurrences do not reflect the values of discipline, order and mutual respect that our party represents. During the proceedings, acknowledgement was given to certain aspirants who stepped down, particularly from one zone.

While congratulating Adeola and stepping down her candidacy as promised, Obasanjo expressed disappointment over lack of recognition for the efforts of her supporters, including the Iyaniwura Foundation, which played a pivotal role in mobilizing support for her candidacy.
She pointed out that despite her extensive consultations and the grassroots momentum generated during her campaign across Ogun State, she and other aspirants were not acknowledged at the meeting, while those from a specific zone were.
Though disappointed, Obasanjo reaffirmed her loyalty to the APC and her unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
She stated clearly that she is not leaving the party but instead remains committed to the collective success of the APC in Ogun State.
She called for the leadership of the APC to embrace a more inclusive process, arguing that true unity within the party could only be achieved through mutual recognition, respect, and engagement.
“True unity is not achieved by consensus alone, but through recognition, respect, and collective engagement,” Obasanjo urged, stressing the need for fair treatment of all aspirants.
