The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has forwarded the name of Murtala Garo to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation after nominating him as the new deputy governor of the state.
This was disclosed late on Tuesday night via a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.
The decision follows the resignation of the former deputy governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, who vacated his position on 27 March 2026.

According to the statement, the nomination was in compliance with the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers the governor to fill such a vacancy.
“The nomination is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the Governor to nominate a Deputy Governor where a vacancy exists,” Muhammad wrote.
He further noted that Governor Yusuf reached the decision after wide consultations with key stakeholders in the state.
“Following wide consultations with key stakeholders, the Governor has requested the Assembly to grant the necessary approval for Garo’s nomination,” the statement added.
