In the quiet outskirts of Nigeria’s capital, where stretches of open land once defined the horizon, the soundscape has changed. Today, it is punctuated by the hum of heavy-duty machines, the grind of earthmovers, and the coordinated rhythm of engineers and construction workers racing against time. What was once an idea—ambitious, contested, and at times stalled—is now steadily transforming into one of Nigeria’s most daring urban experiments: Centenary City.
At the heart of this unfolding narrative is a convergence of vision, politics, engineering precision, and community expectations—a story not just about infrastructure, but about aspiration, identity, and the future of Nigerian cities.
The idea behind Centenary City was never merely about real estate. Conceived as a legacy project to commemorate Nigeria’s centenary, it was envisioned as a symbol of national ambition—a city that would reflect modernity, sustainability, and global competitiveness.
According to the Managing Director of Centenary City, Dr. Ike Odenigwe, the project represents more than buildings and roads.
“Centenary City is not just a futuristic, sustainability-focused, and pedestrian-centric master-planned city—it is the work of thousands of Nigerians building a new economic future,” he said.
The concept is bold: a multifunctional, cosmopolitan urban environment that integrates residential, commercial, and tourism elements into a single ecosystem. Designed to align with global smart city standards, the project aims to elevate Abuja’s profile and attract international investment.
But like many grand visions in Nigeria, the journey from conception to execution has been anything but straightforward.
For years, Centenary City existed more as a promise than a reality—delayed by bureaucratic bottlenecks, regulatory hurdles, and political complexities. That narrative began to change in August 2025.
On August 15, 2025, a critical milestone was achieved: Centenary City management formally engaged Julius Berger Nigeria Plc to deliver primary infrastructure, particularly the 4.3-kilometre Plot Access Road, and Dar Al-Handasah Consultants to handle the detailed engineering design.
Within months, construction commenced—officially kicking off on November 11, 2025. Today, the project stands at approximately 35 percent completion, with an ambitious target commissioning date of April 2027—though contractors are optimistic about delivering ahead of schedule.
At first glance, the project may appear to be just another road construction site. But beneath the surface lies a complex network of infrastructure designed to support a modern city.
Engr. Johnny Kauchan, Head of ACD at Julius Berger, provided insight into the scale and sophistication of the work:
“This road is about a five-meter carriageway in two directions, but it goes far beyond what you see. We are constructing three kilometres of wastewater lines, four kilometres of stormwater systems, and 12 kilometres of power supply, telecommunications, and water infrastructure.”
The project also includes culverts, drainage systems, and integrated utilities—elements often overlooked but critical to the functionality of any urban environment.
Kauchan emphasized that adherence to international standards and safety protocols remains central to the project’s execution, noting that risk assessments and mandatory use of personal protective equipment are strictly enforced.
No major project in Nigeria unfolds in isolation from politics—and Centenary City is no exception.
Stakeholders repeatedly acknowledged the role of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in reviving the project after years of stagnation.
Professor Oke Ikechukwu, Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, was blunt in his assessment:
“There were delays because of politics—not because of the communities, not because of traditional institutions. Then one man, Nyesom Wike, became minister, and in a matter of weeks, all outstanding political obstacles were removed, and Centenary City began.”
