Renowned economist and banker, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has declared his intention to contest for the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election, promising to tackle economic hardship, insecurity, and governance challenges.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Hayatu-Deen said Nigerians are grappling with rising living costs and worsening insecurity, stressing that the country needs urgent leadership intervention.
He said, “Food prices keep going up, petrol prices keep rising, and for many Nigerians, just getting through the day has become a struggle.”
According to him, insecurity has also worsened, with resources being misdirected while citizens remain vulnerable.
“This is not the Nigeria we deserve. It is time to change course, and that is why I am stepping forward,” he added.
The presidential aspirant criticised what he described as a disconnect between the government and the people, noting that current policies have placed significant pressure on households and businesses.
“For too long, this government has looked away while Nigerians bear the burden of bad policies and rising insecurity. We cannot continue like this,” he said.
Hayatu-Deen pledged to offer what he called a practical and credible alternative, anchored on stabilising the economy, restoring security, and rebuilding public trust.
He emphasised the need for calm, experienced leadership.
“Nigeria needs a steady hand, someone who understands how to fix systems, create jobs, and secure lives and livelihoods,” he said.
Drawing on over four decades of experience, he highlighted his track record in economic reforms, investment attraction, and organisational turnaround.
The former presidential aspirant also urged members of the ADC to prioritise unity as the party prepares for the 2027 election.
“Our strength lies in our unity. Nigerians are looking for a credible alternative, and the ADC must rise to that moment,” he stated.
He added that collective effort would be required to build a viable opposition capable of winning power.
Hayatu-Deen is widely known for his contributions to Nigeria’s financial and economic sectors. He previously served as Managing Director and later Chairman of FSB International Bank, where he led a major turnaround of the institution.
He also chaired the Nigerian Economic Summit Group and has served on several national advisory bodies, contributing to economic policy and reform discussions.
In 2000, he was awarded the national honour of the Order of the Niger (OON) in recognition of his service to the country.
With his declaration, Hayatu-Deen joins a growing list of political heavyweights including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Obi, who have signed their intention to contest in the upcoming presidential election.
