ERLING Haaland scored twice as Norway defeated Brazil 2-1 on Sunday, securing a historic FIFA World Cup quarter-final place and eliminating the five-time champions.

Brazil dominated early possession and earned a penalty before the interval after a foul inside Norway’s area, presenting an ideal opportunity to seize control.

However, Bruno Guimarães squandered the chance, firing his penalty off target as Norway survived the scare and entered half-time with the contest still goalless.

Norway gradually settled after the break, with Martin Ødegaard dictating midfield play while Antonio Nusa repeatedly stretched Brazil’s defence with dangerous runs.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 79th minute when Nusa’s precise cross found Haaland, who powered a superb header beyond Alisson.

Brazil pushed desperately for an equaliser, but Norway defended resolutely and continued threatening on swift counter-attacks through Haaland’s pace and physical presence.

Haaland sealed victory in the 89th minute after capitalising on defensive hesitation before calmly finishing past Alisson for his second goal.

Brazil reduced the deficit deep into stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty after a late foul, but there was insufficient time to force extra time.

The victory propelled Norway into the quarter-finals, where they will face the winners of the Round of 16 meeting between England and Mexico.

Haaland’s brace also strengthened his position in the Golden Boot race, underlining another outstanding performance from Norway’s prolific captain.

For Brazil, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, the defeat marked a disappointing end to their quest for a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title. (NAN)
