A devastating fire tore through a popular pub in Bangkok during the early hours of Monday, leaving at least 27 people dead and 63 others injured, Thai officials said. Among the injured, 22 are reported to be in critical condition.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight at an entertainment venue in the northern part of the Thai capital. Thick plumes of black smoke quickly filled the area as frightened customers rushed to escape the burning building. Videos shared by emergency responders showed flames rapidly engulfing the entrance while people gathered outside in panic.

Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, visited the site following the incident and confirmed the death toll.

‘Twenty-seven people died and several have been taken to the hospital,’ he told reporters, adding that investigators are still working to determine how the fire started.

Victims trapped as flames spread rapidly

Emergency services received reports of the fire just before midnight and rushed multiple firefighting and rescue teams to the scene.

The pub, identified by local media as Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, was reportedly consumed by flames within minutes. Rescue personnel initially found one person with severe burn injuries before discovering that several others had become trapped inside the building.

According to local reports, a number of people tried to protect themselves by taking shelter inside the venue’s washrooms. Many of those who lost their lives were later found there.

Firefighters from several stations worked together to contain the blaze, using water hoses to stop the fire from spreading. Officials said the flames were brought under control in around 30 minutes.

Images from the site later revealed extensive damage inside the pub, with burnt furniture, ash-covered floors and rescue teams continuing to search the premises.

Fresh concerns over fire safety

The incident has once again raised questions about fire safety regulations at entertainment venues across Thailand, where several deadly fires have occurred over the years.

In 2022, a fire at a music venue in eastern Thailand claimed the lives of 14 people.

The country’s worst nightclub fire took place in 2009 at Bangkok’s Santika nightclub during New Year’s Eve celebrations. That tragedy killed 66 people and injured more than 200 others after an indoor fireworks display reportedly sparked the blaze.

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into Monday’s incident. Officials are examining what caused the fire, how it spread so quickly and whether the venue had adequate safety measures in place.
