The intensive training features two critical tracks running simultaneously: A Safe from Harm (SfH) assessment track and an intensive Strategic Communications workshop. By pairing internal safety audits with outward-facing visibility strategies, the joint initiative targets the foundational areas needed to drive growth and secure public confidence in contemporary scouting.
The first track is heavily focused on institutional health, specifically executing a comprehensive safeguarding assessment of TSAN as a National Scout Organization (NSO).
Aligning with WOSM’s global mandate that makes safeguarding a fundamental requirement of membership, the session is walking key commissioners and decision-makers through an internal audit. The focus centers on identifying structural gaps, evaluating current youth protection policies, and strengthening case-management and reporting channels.
Running alongside the safety track is a vibrant Communications workshop aimed directly at changing public perception and expanding the Movement’s reach.
This track addresses a long-standing challenge: the lack of clear public visibility and the lingering misconceptions regarding what modern scouting stands for. Participants are being trained on the art of impactful storytelling—learning how to properly document and broadcast TSAN’s community development, humanitarian action, and youth leadership successes to the mainstream media and digital platforms.
The primary goals of the communication track include Clearing Misconceptions: Dismantling old stereotypes to show scouting as a premier, modern non-formal educational movement. Driving Visibility: Equipping communication officers with digital tools to capture high-impact scouting stories. Spurring Public Interest: Packaging the scouting story effectively to attract new youth members, volunteer adult leaders, and strategic corporate partners
By simultaneously addressing how the organization protects its members internally and how it projects itself externally, the WOSM Africa training is setting a new benchmark for TSAN.
As the sessions continue in Abuja, participants are expected to emerge not only with upgraded toolkits to keep scouting safe but also with the media savvy required to loudly and clearly tell the story of Nigerian Scouting to the world.
