James Harrison, famously known as “The Man with the Golden Arm,” dedicated more than six decades to donating his blood plasma, making an incredible 1,173 donations during his lifetime.
His plasma contained a rare and valuable Anti-D antibody, which is used to produce a treatment that protects unborn babies from a potentially life-threatening condition known as rhesus disease.
Without this treatment, a pregnant mother’s immune system can attack her baby’s red blood cells, putting the pregnancy at serious risk.
