Speaking during an interview, he explained that the government deliberately refuses to expand recruitment into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) or the police force because it does not want to spend money on training, equipment, and welfare for new personnel.
He argued that this financial negligence has led directly to the chronic manpower shortage plaguing the nation’s security architecture.
In Prince Adewole Adebayo’s words: “One of the reasons why you see that happen so often, that they kill a general, is that the general is doing a captain’s duty. Otherwise, you will not say a general is killed. If a general is doing a captain’s duty, what do you think the lieutenant will be doing?
The only time we do a corporal’s duty—simple things like patrol reconnaissance—basic things that need to be done, a general is already doing all of that.”
Explaining the government’s reluctance to expand the security forces, he added: “They’re rejecting a lot of people who want to go to the NDA, and that’s because the government doesn’t want to spend money on personnel, on equipment, and kitting, and feeding, and all of that. So they don’t want to spend the money… they’re diverting money for politics.”
