THE Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Mrs Ruth Olusanya, on Monday inspected the Agege Mid-Level Agro Food Hub.
Olusanya was accompanied by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Emmanuel Audu, during the inspection ahead of the facility’s commissioning.
The visit began with a courtesy call on the Agege Local Government Secretariat, where the delegation was received by council chairman, Mr Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa.
Obasa highlighted the hub’s importance to Lagos State’s food security agenda, saying it would improve storage, trading and transportation facilities.
“This hub will provide organised storage, trading floors and adequate parking for our traders, improving access to fresh, affordable food,” he said.
He said the facility aligned with the state’s Produce for Lagos initiative, adding that it would strengthen agricultural trade and improve livelihoods.
“It will strengthen trade and boost income for farmers, traders and market women in Agege,” Obasa said.
The chairman said the council was also partnering with the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund to expand economic opportunities for residents.
“Residents can access business loans at nine per cent interest to promote entrepreneurship and economic empowerment,” he said.
Olusanya commended the Agege council for investing in infrastructure designed to support food distribution and reduce pressure across the agricultural value chain.
“Mid-level hubs are key to reducing post-harvest losses and stabilising food prices across Lagos State,” she said.
Audu urged stakeholders to protect and maintain the facility, warning that its long-term success would depend on collective responsibility.
“Sustainability depends on collective ownership by traders, farmers and council officials,” Audu said.
The delegation later conducted a joint inspection of the agro-food hub alongside council officials and representatives of market leaders.
Officials described the facility as a strategic investment supporting food security, economic resilience and sustainable development for residents of Agege. (NAN)
