The Super Falcons’ scheduled international friendly against Ghana’s Black Queens has been cancelled just days before the start of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Nigeria’s women’s national team announced the development in a statement posted on its official X account on Friday, saying the match, originally slated for Saturday, July 18, in Casablanca, would no longer take place.
According to the team, the fixture was called off due to unforeseen circumstances.
“The friendly match between the 🇳🇬 Super Falcons and the 🇬🇭 Black Queens planned for Saturday, 18 July 2026 in Casablanca is off, due to unforeseen circumstances,” the statement read.
The cancellation comes as both West African rivals intensify preparations for the 2026 WAFCON, which begins on Sunday, July 19, in Morocco.
The warm-up fixture was expected to provide both teams with a final competitive test ahead of the championship.
Nigeria, Africa’s most successful women’s national team with a record 10 WAFCON titles, will compete in Group B alongside Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana as the Super Falcons seek to reclaim the continental crown.
Ghana, meanwhile, have been drawn in Group C, where they will face defending champions South Africa, Mali and Tanzania.
As of Friday evening, neither the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nor the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had issued any additional statement explaining the cancellation.
Both teams are expected to continue their final preparations in Morocco ahead of their opening group-stage matches at the tournament.
