THE Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr Rasaki Bamidele, has urged young people to shun drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
He said this would promote healthy living, maintain sound minds and help build a drug-free society across the council and beyond.
Bamidele made the call on Thursday during the flag-off of the council’s youth sensitisation campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking at the LCDA Civic Centre.
The programme, attended by youths, teachers, behavioural managers and religious leaders, aimed to discourage drug abuse, self-harm and drug-related crimes among young people.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sensitisation campaign will hold across the council’s five wards over three days as part of its social mobilisation initiative.
Speaking at the event, Bamidele said the campaign underscored his administration’s commitment to shaping responsible and productive youths through sustained preventive education programmes.
According to him, the initiative demonstrates the council’s determination to safeguard the future of young people by promoting a safe, healthy and drug-free community.
“Youths remain the greatest asset of any society. Their good conduct will inspire us to do more in building responsible and productive citizens.
“Drug abuse destroys young people in their prime. It brings misery to families and subjects victims to loneliness and depression.
“Therefore, do not be tempted to get involved in it,” he said.
The chairman said the council had introduced programmes aimed at empowering young people through education, leadership development, skills acquisition, civic participation and other positive engagements.
“We believe that informed and empowered youths are the foundation of a peaceful, secure and prosperous Ibeju-Lekki LCDA.
“As we officially declare this programme open, I urge every participant to make a personal commitment today to reject drug abuse and discourage illicit trafficking,” he said.
He urged participants to embrace values that promote excellence, discipline, integrity and responsible citizenship in their daily activities and interactions. (NAN)
