The oldest residential Hall at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA AKINDEKO is ready for occupation after the complete remodeling and makeover of the Iconic students male hostel by the administration of Professor Adenike Oladiji, the Vice Chancellor over 40 years after its construction. The project, funded under the TETFUND 2025 Annual Intervention, is seen as a significant investment in students welfare and campus infrastructure.
The Director of Physical Planning FUTA, Engr. Folorunsho Boyinbode stated that the remodeled Akindeko Male Hostel now comprises 145 rooms with a total of 326 bunks across 8 blocks, A to H. He also stated that the upgraded facility includes reading rooms , common rooms for relaxation , playground , basketball court and well defined conveniences making it one of the best residential hostels for students.
During the handing over of the project, Arch. Samuel Akinpelu of DKT Consults Limited, Abuja, noted that the renovation of the over 40 year old Hall involved complete roof works, installation of stainless steel water tanks to ensure adequate water distribution, and the provision of 50,000 liters of water capacity distributed across the blocks. He added that ground tanks of 5,000 liters and overhead tanks of 4,000 liters were installed at three points, alongside external and internal rewiring. Arch. Akinpelu also highlighted improvements to the toilets, concrete works, and the introduction of access barriers for security. He showed visuals of the hostel before and during the renovation to illustrate the transformation, and said the project now meets modern standards for student accommodation.
Speaking at the event , Professor Adenike Oladiji, described the occasion as a special moment for the university. She noted that the hostel, which has served students for over forty years, was in dire need of comprehensive rehabilitation. Professor Oladiji recalled past patchwork efforts that proved inadequate and said the university took a deliberate decision to secure proper funding for a complete overhaul. She expressed gratitude to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Honourable Minister of Education ,Dr Tunji Alausa for their support, noting that the Minister’s intervention was crucial in securing approval to deploy TETFUND intervention funds specifically for the rebuilding, repair, and renovation of the hostels.
The Vice Chancellor also appreciated TETFUND for its consistent role in strengthening the education sector. According to her, the timely release of funds enabled the Mr kayode Durojaye led Kadex Express Limited, the contracting firm who handled the project to sustain momentum and deliver quality work. She reaffirmed that students remain at the heart of the university’s priorities, stressing that every FUTA graduate should experience decent accommodation, and an environment that fosters community living before leaving the university.
The students Union President, Comrade Ransome Akomolafe, emphasized the importance of students maintaining the new facility. He stated that the student body has been sensitized on the need for discipline and proper upkeep of the hostels. According to him, the Head of Hostel will ensure thorough and consistent cleaning with regular checks to instill discipline among students. Comr. Olusegun urged students moving into the hostel to take responsibility for maintaining the facilities and use them appropriately, ensuring they serve their intended purpose for a long time.
The commissioning of Akindeko Male Hostel marks a new chapter in FUTA’s commitment to providing decent accommodation and learning environments to enhance students learning experience during their academic pursuit in the institution.
