The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), has stressed the importance of the media in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, saying stronger collaboration between defence authorities and journalists is critical in the fight against terrorism and other forms of asymmetric warfare.
The minister stated this on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving the executive members of the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN), led by its President, Mr. Odita Sunday, during a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Defence.
Musa said the military requires the support of the media now more than ever to ensure Nigerians receive timely, factual and credible information on defence and security issues.
“The military really needs the media at this period of asymmetric warfare. My office will continue to maintain an open-door policy to foster a cordial relationship with the media and ensure the dissemination of accurate information to the public,” he said.
He assured the association that the ministry would review its requests and implement those considered feasible.
The minister also urged defence correspondents to uphold professionalism, fairness and balance in their reportage, noting that responsible journalism remains essential to national security and public confidence.
Earlier, DECAN President, Mr. Odita Sunday, congratulated Musa on his appointment as Minister of Defence, describing it as recognition of his competence, professionalism and years of distinguished service to the nation.
He disclosed that the association would confer on the minister the title of Grand Patron of DECAN during its Conference and Award ceremony scheduled for October 2026, where it will also unveil its publication titled Defence Correspondents.
According to Odita, the honour is in recognition of Musa’s support for defence journalism and his contributions to national security.
He reaffirmed DECAN’s commitment to balanced, factual and responsible reporting of defence activities while commending the Armed Forces of Nigeria for their sacrifices in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.
The DECAN president also appealed for closer engagement between the Ministry of Defence and defence correspondents through regular briefings and timely dissemination of information, saying such collaboration would enhance public confidence in the Armed Forces and promote patriotism.
