A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Katsina has ordered the remand of Dr. Bashir Kurfi, a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, after he was arraigned over allegations that the Katsina State Government sponsored bandits to participate in the Hajj pilgrimage.
Magistrate Zaharaddeen Kofar Soro gave the order after the Katsina State Police Command arraigned Kurfi on charges of alleged defamation and injurious falsehood.
The First Information Report read to the defendant alleged that Kurfi made the remarks during an interview he granted to Trust TV on June 24, 2026.
According to the prosecution, Kurfi alleged during the interview that the Katsina State Government sponsored some bandit leaders to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.
The police described the allegation as false, malicious and capable of damaging the image and reputation of the Katsina State Government and the people of the state.
The defendant was charged on two counts under Sections 308 and 309(1) of the Penal Code Law of Katsina State.
The prosecution further alleged that Kurfi made the statement knowing, or having reason to believe, that it could injure the reputation of the government and citizens of Katsina State.
When the charges were read to him, Kurfi pleaded not guilty.
Following his plea, the prosecution urged the court to remand him in police custody pending the conclusion of investigations.
The prosecution argued that granting him bail at this stage could interfere with ongoing investigation.
However, counsel to the defendant, A.D. Umar, opposed the application and urged the court to admit his client to bail, arguing that Kurfi was entitled to his liberty while standing trial.
After listening to both sides, Magistrate Kofar Soro directed the police to continue their investigation and ordered that the defendant be remanded in police custody.
The case was adjourned until Monday, July 14, 2026, for continuation of hearing.
