The presence of an Islamic cleric and a Christian pastor officiating at the burial of the Late Toba Ijaya Ajiboye, the secretary of the Lagos state chapter of NURTW, who was assassinated on 12th July, 2026, has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians.
Videos from the burial have rapidly circulated online, with many expressing their condolences to the bereaved family. Others questioned the deceased’s affiliated religion after noticing the presence of two different religious officials in the burial.
A commenter, @Suleimanolawunmi, bluntly raised the question under a video on Facebook, “Is he a Muslim or a Christian.”
To ease the growing confusion, however, several social media users have attempted to answer the question with different responses.
Some users claimed that the deceased was Christian, pointing to his name “Joel”, but maintained close relations with the Muslim communities by donating to festivals. Another group dismissed the argument outrightly by claiming that he had no specific affiliation, while emphasizing his alleged “giving” nature.
